Main points of FPC Layout design

FPC (flexible circuit board) design involves many key aspects, including material selection, layout design, reinforcement design, etc. Here are some of the main points of FPC design: ‌

‌ Material selection ‌ :

Side keys and main keys are usually selected 18/12.5 double-sided electrolytic copper, to ensure that there is no abnormality in bending more than 8 times.

The connection line also uses 18/12.5 double-sided electrolytic copper to meet the connection needs.

In terms of the material selection of sliding cover plate, the double-layer sliding cover plate uses 1/30Z single-sided copper-free electrolytic copper, while the double-sided sliding cover plate uses 1/30Z double-sided copper-free electrolytic copper to ensure the flexibility and ductility.

The multilayer plate is made of 1/30Z non-gel electrolytic copper to ensure softness and ductility.

The choice of auxiliary materials such as adhesive paper depends on whether ‌SMT (surface mount technology) is required to determine whether to use high temperature adhesive paper.

‌ Layout design ‌ :

FPC design requires presetting basic routes and styles, taking into account the volume of the machine and the location of key components.

Circuit design should pay attention to the use of round-trip tortuous parts, in principle, the use of single-sided FPC, complex lines use double-sided FPC, and pay attention to avoid the formation of holes to affect the folding resistance.

FPC design is basically the same as PCB design, but FPC is soft, not easy to assemble and weld, need to add rigid materials on the back of the components or plugs and other non-bending areas to support or facilitate assembly, these rigid materials are called reinforcement.

‌ reinforcement design ‌ :

Reinforcing materials include ‌PI reinforcing, ‌ steel sheet reinforcing and ‌FR4 reinforcing. PI reinforcement is suitable for plug plates with pull fingers, steel reinforcement should be careful to avoid the risk of short circuit, and FR4 reinforcement is used in other locations where thickness and rigidity need to be increased.

‌ Our company supports the FPC reinforcement area design function, you can directly place the reinforcement area and set the material, thickness and other properties to improve the design efficiency.

‌ Other precautions ‌ :

FPC design also needs to consider factors such as current volume, thermal presets, and copper foil thickness used locally on conductors to ensure circuit insulation and durability.

FPC soft and hard board combines the light and free bending characteristics of flexible circuit boards with the stability and high efficiency of hard circuit boards, suitable for wearable technology and smart devices and other products with high performance and reliability requirements.

Through the above points, FPC design can be effectively carried out to meet the needs of different electronic products.
